Auto industry domestic sales rise by 17.54pc at 1660437 units

Barring negative growth in a few segments like
passenger vans, medium and heavy commercial vehicle passenger carriers, light
commercial vehicles, sales in the automobile industry grew by 17.54 pc in
August 2014 to 1660437 units. All this indicates that the Indian automobile
industry is slowly limping back to normalcy and is possibly getting into growth
mode, thanks to some macro-economic decisions being taken by the new Modi
government. Production of vehicles too grew by 14.86pc in August as compared to
the corresponding month last year to 1943134 units. Exports grew by 15.18pc to
332739 units.
According to the data provided by SIAM, significant
growth was registered in the scooter segment which saw a rise of 30.44pc in
domestic sales to 369323 units. Mopeds grew by 31.54pc at 65871 units. Motorcycles and step-throughs
registered sales of 910312 units, growing by 14.45pc. Passenger cars sold
153758 units in August 2014, registering a growth of 15.16 units. Utility vehicles grew by 18.07
pc at 46501 units. Unfortunately vans did bad with a degrowth of -20.55pc at
13656 units.
Passenger carriers in the medium and heavy
commercial vehicles segment degrew by -25.77 pc at 2682 units while goods
carriers grew by 20.40pc at 14273 units.
Three wheelers domestic sales grew by 23.51pc
in August this year compared to last year, at 52543 units. Passenger carriers
contributed to 44524 units, with the remaining sales from goods carriers at
8019 units.
The industry produced a total 1,943,134 vehicles including passenger
vehicles, commercial vehicles, three wheelers and two wheelers in August 2014
as against 1,691,699 in August 2013, registering a growth of 14.86 percent over
the same month last year.
